I believe strongly in working to improve schools in Pennsylvania. Our youth deserve better than the status quo and we have a responsibility to provide quality education. Senate Bill 1 as offered is problematic, and I voted against the proposal in the Senate Education Committee out of concerns over constitutionality, as well as the lack of academic and financial accountability of schools receiving vouchers.
I am in support of a significant expansion of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit as a viable way to support quality education and school choice. The current version of SB1 weakens the Commonwealth’s commitment to public schools; in my eyes, that fails as a remedy in education improvement. Unfortunately, in this debate, many agendas are at work, and some very powerful ones are working for their own benefit rather than for the benefit of our children.
As Talk to Action reports, “Regardless of your personal stance on “school choice,” it’s important to know who is behind the voucher movement and the agenda they don’t share with the public or advertise in their media campaigns.”
