HARRISBURG, October 9, 2008 – State Senator Jim Ferlo (D-Pittsburgh) today applauded the Pennsylvania Housing and Finance Agency (PHFA) vote to fund two important projects that he has been advocating for in the City of Pittsburgh and the 38th Senatorial District.
1) Bryant Street in the Highland Park neighborhood of Pittsburgh is undergoing a major facelift. Senator Ferlo, Highland Park Community Development Corporation, and East Liberty Development, Inc have been leading the way on a complete overhaul of this important neighborhood commercial district. The PHFA has awarded a $500,000 loan to help complete this mixed use development project of townhomes and retail storefronts known as Bryant Street Square.
2) The Penn Fairmont Development is an ongoing project of Friendship Development, Inc. and the Pittsburgh Housing Development Corporation in the Garfield and Friendship neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. PHFA has awarded a $950,000 loan to Phase II of the project to continue to move the project deeper into the neighborhood, improving the residential community at-large. The phase of the development will bring 18 new homes to the neighborhood, each with 3 bedrooms, 1 ½ to 3 baths, and 10 will be VisitAble. Garfield and Friendship are both undergoing enormous changes and it is believed that developments such as these will lead to a transformation that old and new residents alike can embrace.
Senator Ferlo is proud to have supported both of these applications and is looking forward to the successful completion of both developments. He has been a strong supporter of urban neighborhood reinvestments and redevelopment and believes that strategic developments can revitalize Pittsburgh and the region.
