| Ferlo Hosts Medicare Birthday Celebration |
LAWRENCEVILLE, July 30, 2008 - - Healthcare groups and organizations from across Pennsylvania today joined state Sen. Jim Ferlo (D-Pittsburgh) in celebrating the 43rd birthday of Medicare.
Ferlo said the celebration recognizes the passage of Federal Medicare, which was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965, and calls for legislation that would create a single payer national health care plan.
“Medicare is undoubtedly one of the most successful social programs in the United States,” Ferlo said. “All Medicare beneficiaries are extremely pleased with their coverage, and there is no better time than now to make improvements and expand this program to everyone in the country.”
Some of the groups that participated in today’s Medicare birthday celebration included the W. PA Coalition for Single-Payer Healthcare, SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, Healthcare4AllPA, Alliance for Retired Americans, and the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses & Allied Professionals.
The celebration is just one of many taking places across the United States to draw attention to the success of the federal Medicare program, and calling for a move toward a more efficient and effective single payer health care model.
“Today’s event was a lot of fun, but we are faced with a very serious problem in the United States. Our current health care system is not sustainable,” Ferlo said. “We need to find a better way to pay for health care and we think single payer is the way to do it.”
