HARRISBURG, June 17, 2008 - State Senator Jim Ferlo (D-Pittsburgh) today commended Gov. Edward G. Rendell for nominating Dr. Edmund Effort of Pittsburgh for the State Board of Dentistry.
Ferlo recommended Dr. Effort, and said Senate confirmation is expected this week.
Dr. Effort has been a dentist for over 30 years and currently operates an office in downtown Pittsburgh. He also has a distinguished military career, recently retiring as a colonel. His missions and assignments included activation in support of Desert Shield, Langley AFB Va. (1991), the humanitarian mission to Ghana West Africa (1996), Moron Spain (1988), Sandes, Norway, and three deployments to Combat Medical Readiness Training, Alpena Michigan.
Ferlo added that he would continue to call for more African American appointments to the Court of Common Pleas in Allegheny County. The Senator has repeatedly called for the governor to appoint Attorney Joseph Williams of Pittsburgh to fill one of the current vacancies.
Williams earned his Juris Doctor Degree in 1982 from the Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh. He also holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. Williams has worked as a private attorney since 1985, specializing in criminal defense, international transactions, real estate development, and contract and corporate law.
Williams has also volunteered his time with numerous community organizations including serving as a trustee for the Pittsburgh History and Landmark Development Corporation, as secretary of the county’s Sports and Exhibition Authority, and on the board of directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Negro Education Emergency Drive.
