Natrona Heights, April 11, 2007 - State Senator Jim Ferlo (D-Pittsburgh) today announced that the Freeport Leechburg Apollo Group (FLAG), a newly incorporated multi-municipal non-profit organization, would celebrate an award of funding at 9:30AM on April 12, 2007 at the National City Branch in Freeport, PA.
“When I convened the municipalities to propose they collaborate in a Multiple Main Street concept, I was challenging them to think creatively in a cooperative spirit,” Senator Ferlo said. “I know that to be successful, they would need to set aside their municipal boundaries and pursue a regional economic revitalization strategy.”
A $7500 seed grant from National City is being presented to Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation on behalf of FLAG. The seed grant will be used to assist FLAG in conducting a “visioning” exercise that will include community meetings in each of the respective municipalities. The visioning process will identify each community’s assets and weaknesses. This process is part of the Dept. of Community & Economic Development’s Main Street Program requirements. FLAG will adopt the Mains Streets program as the underpinning for its 5-year economic development plan geared towards revitalizing each borough’s traditional commercial corridors.
“The combination of National City’s commitment to our region coupled with PHLF’s dedication to preserving and protecting local historically significant sites gives us a leg up,” Ferlo said. “As we plan for future economic vitality, we’re building on the assets of the past.”
Mr. Art Ziegler, President of PHLF, and a representative from National City were on hand for the celebration.
“In PHLF, we have an invaluable partner with unparalleled experience reinvigorating the historic buildings and districts of our region,” Ferlo said. “Their commitment in the face of the unique and sizeable challenges faced during various historic rehabilitation project cannot be overstated.
“The same can be said for National City, who time and again show their commitment to reinvesting in our neighborhoods and small towns. Not only their funding, but their time, effort and experience bring inestimable value to the projects they undertake,” Ferlo added.
FLAG will use its funds, including a $100,000 state grant secured by Senator Ferlo, and the cooperation of Armstrong County officials, to build a base of resources. As dictated by the Main Street Program guidelines, FLAG will use its resources to reinvest in the business districts of the municipalities it serves. The group’s mission is to leverage other private investment to reinvigorate the economic vitality of Freeport, Leechburg, and Apollo boroughs.
